Wi-Fi is something we all know – for years now, we are using the wireless internet technology for our various needs. It is available in the airport, libraries, campuses and every section of our home. But Z-Wave is still new to many of us. Z-Wave and Wi-fi are both wireless networks and both functions to help our devices communicate.
Now, the question arises, if both have the same functionality, how do we choose, and which one is better? Let us briefly understand this!
Wi-Fi is a technology which was introduced long time back in 1998, whereas Z-Wave was introduced in 2001 by Zensys. Wi-Fi works to create a local area network without cables. Z-Wave is a unique mesh system which works to connect devices which uses low energy radio waves.
Which one is a better technology? Just as in all other cases, there might not be any one answer to the question. The answer is that it usually depends on a number of conditions. Here are some of these:
It is known that Wi-Fi is a lot centralized. It is dependent on the router which provides a network. Wi-Fi Aware will not require a router. However, it can just connect a single device to another device at a time and that too in a limited range. Being a mesh system, Z-Wave is quite resilient and often quite popular in security systems. The more devices you have which are Z-Wave compatible, the better will it be. However, it is just opposite in case of Wi-Fi. Here the connection gets a lot slow when there are more number of devices connected.
Wi-Fi can cause a lot of battery drain. As laptops and smartphones are connected to the Wi-Fi, their battery is drained very quickly. Thus, as a result many people are reluctant to wear fitness bands or watches which need to be recharged quite often. Even if anyone is willing to charge a device, it might not be convenient to keep charging it time and again. It is just opposite in case of Z-Wave. It needs little power.
Wi-Fi is quite vulnerable and prone to attacks and exploits. However, it is known that Sigma Designs offers some additional layers of protection. Thus, it is known that each Z-Wave network and its various products have unique ID’s which are suitable for communication. Besides, carrying devices which can actually broadcast their location doesn’t help in staying private. Companies are already using Wi-Fi Connectivity in phones for tracking our location. Now Z-Wave is advantageous as it doesn’t get integrated into so many devices.
Wi-Fi enjoys a benefit of being ubiquitous. It implies that making connection to different devices through a Wi-Fi is quite enticing. Z-Wave on the other hand is still making its way and trying to establish itself. It depends on your requirements and what you choose.
It doesn’t always have to be a choice or which to use for connection. Many devices that connect to Z-Wave can also connect to Wi-Fi. Z-Wave doesn’t compete at all with Wi-Fi.
